9 Career Wardrobe Must-Haves

9 Career Wardrobe Must-Haves

Hello there! Perusing Pinterest is one of my favorite past-times - looking up recipes, pinning photos of gorgeous houses and of course finding all the fashion inspiration. One of my favorite things to search is work and career wear because its what I wear 5-6 days out of the week - no bluejeans or leggings here.

Throughout my time in college and in my career, I’ve landed on a number of closet staples that keep me feeling confident and looking professional at work. If you’re planning out your post-grad workwear or looking for items to add to your closet, keep reading for my nine career wardrobe must-haves.

Black Dress - If there was a must-have to end all must-haves, a professional black dress would be it! It is so versatile - job interviews, evening work receptions, important meetings … the list goes on. Something with a cap or 3/4 sleeve will always be timeless.

Black Heels - These babies go with just about everything and you can really tailor them to your personal style. I have a pair of black Nine West wedges and I love them. They’ve lasted four years of walking on bricks, throughout cities and so much more.

White Blouse - I am always on the hunt for a new white blouse when I go shopping. I love the ones with more feminine details, cap or flutter sleeves, and that look good tucked in. White goes with everything and (despite what my mother says about no white after Labor Day) never goes out of style.

Nude Flats - A flat shoe is a must-have in any color, but in a light beige or nude, they can go with your neutrals and with your brighter wardrobe pieces. They’re perfect to have in your bag if you’re running errands for work and they also look great with a sundress or with a suit and blazer!

Reversible Belt - 100% staple for my wardrobe. I often mix between a brown-based outfit and a black-based one throughout the week, so having a nice leather belt that can function no matter what I decide to wear is superb. I also love it when I’m traveling because I don’t have to worry about forgetting a matching belt.

Colorful Cardigans - Cardigans are my best friend, truly my favorite way to stay warm, but also cover my shoulders when I feel like I need to. Sweaters are where you can add a little excitement and show some personality through the colors. I have my standard black, white and cream colored cardigans, but I also have blue, pink, grey and am dying to find a floral print one for spring!

Rain Jacket - When you have to walk to a meeting outside or just get to your car during a torrential downpour, you’ll be thankful for a professional raincoat! It may seem silly to have a rain jacket when you can just buy an umbrella, but when rain starts coming at you sideways, a little more coverage will be appreciated!

Carry-all Bag - Having a work bag that matches just about every outfit you could ever wear while holding all your essentials is super important as a young career woman. You want to look put together while also keeping your favorite items secured in a tote bag (especially if that sideways rain comes back.) Take the time and energy to research and invest in a bag that you’re going to love and use for many years.

Favorite Skirt - Last, but certainly not least, find a favorite skirt and get it in just about every color you can find. I am a sucker for J Crew’s cinched waste wool skirts - they fall at the right length for me, adjust after a yummy team lunch, but also look professional. Find a brand and style you like and keep your eye out when new colors or prints become available so you can add them to your wardrobe!

While I’m no fashion expert, I’ve worn work clothes 5-6 days per week for the last six years, and these pieces are literally my tried and true. The ones I will always replenish and stock up on, since I know I’m going to wear them often!
